Eve in the Tree of KnowledgeIn the mid 20th century Greek and biblical mythology ignited my imagination more than comic books. The stories seemed to be both surreal and insightful into our human condition. When I re-read them decades later it is through a lens of gender awareness.
Eve is both a goddess and a woman in a hierarchy who elects to make her own choices. Persephone is a goddess who is bartered, tricked and controlled, but able to keep a connection to her femaleness. Each speaks to female gender roles.
I imagine Eve in the Tree of Knowledge, with a thirst for knowledge despite consequences. I see Persephone, a victim of others’ choices and consequences, shutting her eyes to them, remembering she is a goddess and dreaming the springtime of her own creation.
